Ku-ring-gai Council has resolved to continue with the upgrade of Norman Griffiths Oval at West Pymble as a synthetic turf field.

At an Extraordinary Meeting on 11 September, the Council resolved to adopt an additional budget of $5.4 million to complete the project.

Council considered a report based on advice from recognised industry experts and has decided to proceed with completing the project, including a synthetic turf playing surface offering all-weather usability and extended playing hours, as well as lower regular yearly maintenance costs.

In May this year, Council terminated the construction contract for the project due to significant delays, environmental incidents, design problems and various contractual issues.

Council will now undertake the completion of the design, amend the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) accordingly and run a transparent and robust procurement process to ensure the project can be completed as soon as possible next year.

Included in the next phase of the project will be investigating the latest technology in synthetic turf, with consideration for end-of-life recycling.

Complex design and construction requirements for the management of stormwater around the field will form a crucial part of the work.

This includes the completion of the 2.4 megalitre detention basin underneath the playing surface and the construction of a bio-basin which is environmentally beneficial for either a synthetic or natural turf field.

The field has been designed to ensure that its surface is not inundated during a 1-in-100 year flood event, through an overland flow path to divert stormwater around the playing field.

The cost of completing the project is estimated to be $5.4 million and sufficient funding is available in Council’s infrastructure and facilities reserve.

The upgrade of Norman Griffiths Oval also includes lighting, fencing, pathways, landscaping and a new electronic scoreboard.
