swim instructor kfac named best in australia

Randev (Dev) Sappany has been named the best adult swim instructor in Australia at the AUSTSWIM 2020 Awards of Excellence.

The Y NSW instructor from Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre at West Pymble won both the State and National Access and Inclusion - Adults categories at the awards announced last week.

At just 24 years old, Dev has expanded the Centre's adult swim programs to include intermediate and advanced levels, adult intensive clinics and parent and child family lessons. He has also conducted more than 200 adult swim assessments.

He said his passion for teaching adults comes from his students' own desire to learn. "Adults in swimming lessons are there because they want to be - you see a lot of them have gone through a few other swim schools because they weren't getting what they wanted out of a lesson or they're determined to learn something new.

“I like being able to figure how I can best help them reach their goals," he said.

Dev said the impact of the 4-month break during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic had been significant.

"Some of things we'd been working on had regressed and we had to go back a few months in terms of progress and technique. It's great to be back in the pool now building that confidence back up."

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said hundreds of swimming classes for adults and children had been held since the Council opened the new centre in 2014.

“On behalf of the Ku-ring-gai community I congratulate Dev on his outstanding achievement.”
