Drawing and mixed media

Drawing essentials #2

Explore drawing techniques and the basic principles of drawing, line, tone, perspective and composition. Learn right brain drawing and how to see with an artist’s eye. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal style. Suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their drawing skills.

The joy of painting and drawing #3

This class will cover design elements and principles, colour theory, composition, tone and basic perspective. We’ll also explore techniques, materials and subject matter during the course and some art history. The overall emphasis is about enjoying the experience of creating art. All levels welcome.

Pencil shading and sketching #7

In this class you will learn the techniques of pencil shading and sketching objects proportionately and putting them together in an interesting composition. You will then learn to pencil shade them with light and tone to create depth as the class progresses. These techniques will also be explored using graphite to learn detailing of an interesting object/composition, making it look extremely realistic. This class is perfect for people who want to unwind and learn valuable pencil shading and sketching techniques. Ideal for both beginners to intermediate level.

An ideal course for beginners or those wishing to improve their painting and drawing skills. Enjoy the learning process. Be guided through the basic principles of painting and drawing, including tone, line, composition and perspective. Experience handling a variety of media - pastels, pencil, ink, watercolour, acrylic paint and more. Through these processes students are encouraged to explore and develop personal expression.

Towards abstraction #16

This is a class for those who want to take their art into abstraction, with a process of learning and experimenting with tools, mediums, methods and techniques - this includes making handmade brushes and tools. Each week students look at different artists via video and images, and their approach to abstraction - inquiring into styles and expressions helping to understand our own visual language. Connecting with emotion, taking risks, trust and intuition are integral to creating abstract art. Integrating drawing throughout and extending into mixed media. Enjoy the process and the result whilst increasing your understanding of colour, shape, design, texture, value and line. All welcome - some prior experience in drawing and painting is helpful.

Expressive life drawing #20

By using different media, beginners will be encouraged to explore individual development of personal drawing skills - understanding line and tone, observation of form-movement and shade control. Advanced students will continue to experiment with the above studies, and introduce acrylic, ink and watercolour.

Exploring drawing - objective to abstract #33

 In this class there is a focus on observation through drawing and is extended using different mediums like charcoal, pencil, crayons, ink, acrylic, paper and canvas, collage and mixed media. By looking at different artists each week, individual styles are explored. Encompassing traditional methods to experimental processes, through to abstraction. Encouraging enjoyment in the process of creating whilst learning about colour, value, line, shape, form, design and composition. Suits all levels of drawing experience.

Creative writing

Creative Writing #25

Creative Writing is an art, and like painting, sculpture or composing music it requires technique in order to facilitate the imagination. Classes include: Writing as Discovery; Detail; Metaphor and Imagery; Narrative Strategies; Vulnerability; Extreme Writing; Truth, Originality and Dialogue; Voice; The Rut and The Groove; The Conscious, The Unconscious and the Self-conscious; Mood; Poetics; Paradox; Editing and many more.
We learn to support each other and reveal our differences. Beginners are absorbed and gently brought on by contact with more experienced students. We produce a booklet of work at year’s end and go on an inspirational excursion.

Encaustic - new class! #5

This class is an introduction to mixed media and encaustic work. Encaustic dates back to 800 BC Egypt and works well as a medium with oil paints. It is great for printmakers and photographers as well as anyone who loves using mixed media but doesn't want to frame under glass. Many materials will be and used (ink, collage, frottage, charcoal and acrylic). Encaustic is a very versatile wax medium that enhances any surface and blends well with mixed media compositions on board to create amazingly layered and luminous work.

Oil painting #22

You will learn the fundamentals of painting and during each session be introduced to new techniques so you build your skills. Students will learn about paint materials, the fundamental skills of tone and composition, different ways of applying paint, organising your palette and colours and how to move on to larger individual projects. This course is for beginners and intermediate students.

Glass art

Glass Art 

Learn to make unique creations in clear and coloured glass and sometimes even recycling old glass. Working with pure colour in transparent and opaque forms, pieces can include platters, bowls, sculpture, wall hangings, mobiles, jewellery or whatever your imagination allows. We will work together in a fun and relaxed environment and fire on-site so you can collect your pieces throughout the term. All levels welcome.

Guitar

Practical guitar theory #27

Do you want to take your guitar playing and knowledge to the next level? Professional guitarist and Sydney Conservatorium alumni Kieren Brereton shows you the practical tips, tricks and knowledge you need to approach any gig or style. Create ceramics in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Use basic coil, wheel throwing and hand building fundamentals to create your works. Jewellery

Jewellery studio 

An introduction to the ancient craft of jewellery making using sterling silver and base metals (copper, brass and nickel). Beginners learn to silver solder, cut, file and form metal to create their own rings, earrings or pendants. More advanced students can develop their personal style and progress their skills in areas such as stone setting. Suitable for all levels.

Trompe l'oeil: to trick the eye - new class! #41

Confused if it's real? Then this is Trompe L'Oeil Art. Clever realism to amaze the spectator. Over nine weeks, this class aims for the student to achieve at least four Trompe L'Oeil studies. They can be of any subject they choose. Maybe an open window, revealing a romantic Tuscan landscape; perhaps a marble terrace, decked with potted flowers, framing a view across the Ionian Sea; the combinations are endless. Learn the art of faux marble, wood graining, fake stone, and the science of perspective.
