The Art Centre offers classes for all levels of experience and ability. Our classes are held in light, airy studios providing a stimulating atmosphere in which to work.

Professional artists teach interesting workshops throughout the year and fresh ideas and techniques are taught in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Students are required to bring their own art materials however some materials are provided.

Narrative with figure drawing

An intensive one day workshop exploring figure drawing with costume to tell story. With the aid of a life model, students will learn how to get inspire to communicate an idea and explore the use of watercolour with the figure. Preferable intermediate to advance level learner.

Botanical art

Introduction to botanical art

Botanical art is a unique and specialised form of art which portrays an object with precision and detail to bring out their realistic beauty. In this workshop participants will learn the techniques of sketching an object proportionately and then use watercolours the right way with light and tone to create depth in an object for botanical art. They will also learn the techniques to do detailing in an object to make it look absolutely realistic.

This course is ideal for beginners and students that have some experience in watercolour. By the end of this workshop the participants will have the knowledge of:

Sketching and pencil shading principles with light and tone.

Basics of detailing for pencil in botanical art.

Basics of watercolour application with light, tone and detailing for an object.

Confidence to attempt an object in botanical art themselves.

Mail principles of botanical art.

Slip cast mug mould

Simple slip cast mug mould

Day 1: Make a simple 2 part slip cast mug mould

A demonstration of the slip cast mould process will be given. Then it will be your turn to create a mug from clay that will be made into a two part plaster mould. In the afternoon you will make a two-part mould from your piece in plaster.

Day 2: 4 weeks on

Once plaster moulds are dry then the slip cast moulding can take place. In this class you will be shown how to pour slip into your mould and then how to assemble moulded parts. You will then use the rest of the morning to slip cast your pieces and assemble them. You will be encouraged to be creative with extra surface treatment. The afternoon is free for you to experiment with mould making or continue on with making pieces from your new mould.

Sunday 1 May and Sunday 5 June (2 days over 2 months), 10am - 4:30pm

Printmaking

Printmaking - drypoint with carborundum

Combine the simple, safe and straightforward printmaking technique of drypoint and add rich textural tones with carborundum grit mixed with gesso. Using larger A3 size plastic drypoint plates you will draw directly onto the plates with an etching needle to create your image then paint tones onto the plate with the carborundum mixture. Day 1 should see everyone complete plate making and start to experiment with the printing. Day 2 students are free to make more plates or concentrate on printing. Once the plates are made the printing possibilities are endless. Some of the printing technique to be used are chine colle, a la poupee and multiple plate printing.

Sunday 29 May and Sunday 5 June (2 days over 2 months), 10am - 4:30pm

Life Drawing

Week life drawing intensive

Develop longer drawings from a life model and explore the vitality and expressiveness of the human form. Be bold, expressive and totally involved in the life drawing process.

Suitable for advanced and beginner artists willing to work hard, experiment and extend themselves during the five-day workshop.

Tuesday 4 January to Saturday 8 January, 10am - 4.30pm

Tutor - Paul Miller. $650 for 5-day workshop inc. a model each day

Portraits

Painting portraits in oils or mixed media

Students can choose to paint a realistic portrait study in oils or an expressionistic style portrait in either oils, acrylic or mixed media from photo reference (supplied). Working from life is not always convenient so learn about the limitations of using photos. Working in layers, day one focuses on the drawing, composition & construction of a tonal underpainting, rendering a good foundation to build your portrait and strengthen your observational skills. Day two, how to set out a basic oil colour palette for mixing skin tones, fine tuning tonal values and rendering form. Day 3 students can either continue to achieve a realistic portrait focusing or more loosely energetic freestyle portrait. The tutor will also demonstrate along the way.

Saturday 8 January to Monday 10 January, 10am - 4.30pm
