The Art Centre offers classes for all levels of experience and ability. Our classes are held in light, airy studios providing a stimulating atmosphere in which to work.

Professional artists teach interesting workshops throughout the year and fresh ideas and techniques are taught in a fun and friendly atmosphere. Students are required to bring their own art materials however some materials are provided.

Painting animals in watercolour #127

Learn how to paint quick and expressive watercolours, with fewer brushstrokes using limited palette, oversimplifying shapes and avoiding adding too many details.

Press mould workshop

Press mould workshop #128

Day 1 (Make a simple 2 part plaster press mould)

A demonstration of the press mould process will be given. Then it will be your turn to create something from clay that will be made into a two part plaster mould. In the afternoon you will make two-part mould from your piece in plaster.

Day 2 (4 weeks on)

Once moulds are dry then the press moulding can take place. In this class you will be shown how to press clay into your mould and then assemble moulded parts. You will then use the rest of the morning to press mould your pieces and assemble them. You will be encouraged to be creative with extra carving and surface treatment. The afternoon is free for you to experiment with mould making or continue on with making pieces from your new mould.

Drawing and painting the art of dance

Expressing dance through art #129

‘Art is not what you see, but what you make others see’- Edgar Degas

Artists from Pieter Brueghel the Elder ('The Wedding Dance') to Toulouse Lautrec's Moulin Rouge series, Degas and many others, have been captivated by the rhythmical patterns of forms and colours, and passion and energy of ‘The Dance’. In this workshop a trained dancer will be made available to inspire you with poses from various dance styles - ballet to contemporary. This exciting theme will explore through drawing (Day 1) and painting (Day 2), the spontaneous gestures and joy which connect us in a unique way with the present moment.

Raku firing workshop #132

Using pieces made from your press moulding workshop or pieces made in this class, this exciting workshop explores the method of Raku.

Day 1

Learn how to make your own Raku glaze. In the afternoon you will make pieces for Raku firing.

Day 2 - 5 weeks on

Using the Raku glazes made you will glaze your pieces and then participate in a Raku firing to finish them.

Portraits

Expressive portraits - oils or mixed media

In this 2 day workshop learn to paint portraits from photo reference (supplied by the tutor) in either oils, acrylic or mixed media. Painting from life is not always convenient, learn to be aware of the limitations of photo images and how to compensate for what you do and don’t see. The tutor will also demonstrate along the way. Day one focuses on the drawing, composition & construction, setting up your palette. Day two, mixing skin tones, fine tuning tonal values and expressing your personal style into your portrait.

Encaustic

An introduction to encaustic

Learn how to start with encaustic and how to build layers with encaustic. This ancient technique dates back to 800BC but it has so many contemporary art applications. Students will also explore collage and pastels with encaustic, as well as carving into encaustic. Learn how to make a lustre filled mixed media piece. 

All materials provided including a wooden substrate for a final artwork to be completed and ready to hang when you get home.

Mixed Media - Acrylic Ink Background

Mixed media - acrylic ink background

Students will create a beautiful, colourful background in a relatively short time. You’ll then be guiding through the process of adding other materials such as gesso applied with stencils, acrylic paint, tissue paper and other decorative trim to produce a beautiful textured piece of artwork while having loads of fun.

Summer School 2022 

Life Drawing

Week life drawing intensive

Develop longer drawings from a life model and explore the vitality and expressiveness of the human form. Be bold, expressive and totally involved in the life drawing process.

Suitable for advanced and beginner artists willing to work hard, experiment and extend themselves during the five-day workshop.

Tuesday 4 January to Saturday 8 January, 10am - 4.30pm

Portraits

Painting portraits in oils or mixed media

Students can choose to paint a realistic portrait study in oils or an expressionistic style portrait in either oils, acrylic or mixed media from photo reference (supplied). Working from life is not always convenient so learn about the limitations of using photos. Working in layers, day one focuses on the drawing, composition & construction of a tonal underpainting, rendering a good foundation to build your portrait and strengthen your observational skills. Day two, how to set out a basic oil colour palette for mixing skin tones, fine tuning tonal values and rendering form. Day 3 students can either continue to achieve a realistic portrait focusing or more loosely energetic freestyle portrait. The tutor will also demonstrate along the way.
