Jessie Tu on women's work

Jessie Tu is a strong voice in Australian fiction. Besides writing journalism for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian and Women's Agenda, she has now published a follow up to the acclaimed bestseller A Lonely Girl is a Dangerous Thing, winner of the ABIA for Literary Fiction Book of the Year.

The Honeyeater is 'A searing critique of academia, but one that cleverly weaves in an exploration of skewed power dynamics, the nature of translation and mother-daughter relationships. It's fast-paced and written with an intensity that will drive you from page to page. But it's the themes Tu explores – exploitation and deception – that make The Honeyeater both biting and memorable.' -The Guardian

It is the story of Fay, a young literary translator and her tumultuous relationships with two women. The first is her boss, a powerful figure in the world of letters and the second is her mother, with whom Fay still lives.

Join us for a discussion of Jessie's work and the role of her characters; as storytellers, translators, workers and women.
