Have your say on funding better local infrastructure

infrastructure your say

The Ku-ring-gai community is invited to have its say on proposed rate increase options to fund vital local infrastructure.

Ku-ring-gai Council is considering four options to increase rates, of which three will allocate additional funding for the renewal and upgrade of aging infrastructure.

Over the past decade, the cost of providing Council services has increased by 40% but rates revenue has only grown by 28%, largely due to NSW Government rate pegging.

In addition, Ku-ring-gai’s total rates revenue per capita is below the Sydney average, despite Council having a large infrastructure portfolio to maintain.

This situation has reduced Council’s capacity to maintain, renew and upgrade $1.8 billion worth of local infrastructure, including community buildings, stormwater and drainage, parks and recreational facilities, footpaths, local roads and more.

Without an increase in rates beyond the assumed NSW Government rate peg of 3%, the quality of infrastructure is expected to decline.

Council is seeking feedback on four options:

  • Deteriorating Infrastructure (3% increase in rates in line with NSW Government rate peg)
  • Renew Infrastructure (22% increase in rates, including rate peg)
  • Renew and Enhance Infrastructure (29% increase in rates, including rate peg)
  • Renew, Enhance and Expand Infrastructure (33% increase in rates, including rate peg)

Options 2, 3 and 4 will provide between $16.5 million and $26.3 million in additional annual funding to renew and upgrade a range of existing and new infrastructure.

This infrastructure includes stormwater and drainage, community buildings, recreational facilities and open space areas, traffic and transport works and footpaths.

Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said all ratepayers are invited to share their views on the proposed options.

“We encourage all ratepayers to find out more about each of the four options and share their thoughts on what they believe would be the best outcome for the community,” Mayor Kay said.

“Your valuable feedback will help inform the decision our Council takes.”

Letters and brochures have been posted to all Ku-ring-gai ratepayers. Detailed information on each of the four options is also available on Council’s website.

Ratepayers can have their say before Sunday 31 August. For more information visit our engagement hub.
