National Tree Day in Ku-ring-gai
Published on 17 July 2025
The community is being invited to plant an area of the endangered Duffy’s Forest ecological community at St Ives Showground.
This year’s National Tree Day event is at St Ives Showground on Sunday 27 July between 10am and 1pm.
The public are asked to bring gardening gloves and wear closed toe shoes, long pants and long sleeves.
Tools will be provided and Council staff are on hand to assist with planting. Participants can enjoy a free BBQ afterwards.
Ku-ring-gai’s National Tree Day event will see the planting of trees, shrubs and groundcovers. The mix of species will supplement the endangered Duffys Forest ecological community, boost vegetation after recent storm damage and biodiversity across the local area.
Duffys Forest ecological community is the accepted name for plants naturally occurring on the ridgetops, plateaus and slopes on Hawkesbury sandstone. It is predominantly found in the Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby and Northern Beaches council areas of Sydney.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said around 150 trees, 350 shrubs and 200 groundcover plants would be planted on the day.
“This will be very positive for the health of this ecological community and benefit local wildlife and birds by providing food and habitat”.
“You can plant a tree for a loved one and help keep Ku-ring-gai’s beautiful environment living on in their memory.”
National Tree Day is Australia’s biggest community tree-planting and nature care event.
Co-founded by Planet Ark in 1996, it has since had more than 5 million people participate and plant over 27 million native trees and shrubs.
