Native plant identification workshop

The ideal event for environmental voIunteers wanting to improve their plant identification skills.

You will learn:

  • Useful botanical terms and resources
  • Basic plant anatomy and taxonomy
  • Overview of 3 major plant families and their traits
  • How to key out an unknown plant like a professional botanist using flowering plant samples
  • Introduction to major native plant families
  • Botanical keywords
  • Use your senses to help with plant identification
  • How to key out an unknown plant using a botanical key.

What to bring

  • Notepad & pen
  • Keep cup (morning tea will be provided)
  • Useful to bring but not essential: hand lens, camera, "Field guide to the native plants of Sydney" by Les Robinson
  • Please wear closed shoes and sun protection.

Where to meet

The workshop on 1 March will be held at Dampier's Clearing.

The workshop on 22 May will be held at Caley's Pavilion.

This is technical training for plant enthusiasts and is not suitable for children under 16 years.

This is an outdoor event, under shelter. There will be a short walk so wear suitable clothing, sun protection and jacket. If there is extreme weather forecast, you will be notified and event will be cancelled.

Accessible for people with limited mobility.

Expect a short leisurely walk to identify distinctive features of native plants.
