2024 Ku-ring-gai Sculpture Trail winners announced
Published on 06 September 2024
A clay sculpture based on a casuarina tree seed pod and a cube decorated with flowers made from recycled plastic bottles have taken the top prizes in this year’s Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden Sculpture Trail.
The Sculpture Trail gives artists the opportunity to exhibit works made from recycled materials in the beautiful bushland surroundings of the Wildflower Garden at St Ives.
A total of 39 sculptures have been installed along walking paths in the Garden to form the Sculpture Trail. A QR code is available on the walk and gives detailed descriptions of each artwork and the artist.
The 2024 Sculpture Trail is part of Ku-ring-gai’s Eco Festival during September and October. The Eco Festival aims to raise community awareness of how to live a sustainable life.
Over $5,000 worth of prizes have been awarded to artists for this year’s trail. Prizes for the Sculpture Trail are funded by Ku-ring-gai’s environmental levy.
Michelle Macbeth was the open category winner with a sculpture called Home, which is based on a casuarina tree seed pod. Michelle says that in making the piece, she was inspired by the peaceful swaying sound of casuarina trees next to lakes.
Knox Grammar Preparatory School’s Year 4 students won the junior category for a piece called Flower Fantastic. This artwork is a ‘magic cube’ decorated with ‘flowers’ made from plastic bottles recycled from the school’s athletics carnival.
