The Council successfully applied for funding for the new positions through the NSW Government’s Fresh Start for Local Government Apprentices, Trainees and Cadets program.

Administered by the NSW Office of Local Government, the $252 million program will run over the next six years and aims to ensure councils can adequately plan for filling their workforce needs in the future.

Recent research on local government shows that the sector is hampered by an ageing workforce and a critical shortage of younger employees in trades and other vital roles within councils.

Ku-ring-gai Council was successful in gaining funding for 21 trainees and apprentices and positions are currently being advertised.

The 21 positions are in engineering, planning, early childhood education, plumbing, environment & sustainability, sportsfields and parks, electrotechnology, events and communications.

Mayor Christine Kay welcomed the funding, saying it would help the Council effectively plan for the future.

“The creation and funding of these positions is a significant achievement following the implementation of the Council’s early careers program this year”.

“It’s a great opportunity for those looking to start their career in local government”.
