Ku-ring-gai to mark National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day

Ku-ring-gai Council will host a commemoration ceremony this Wednesday honouring the lives lost to family violence and reaffirming its commitment to prevention and community support.
A distinctive purple seat will be unveiled by Mayor Christine Kay and Councillors at St Ives Village Green at 11am on Wednesday 7 May, accompanied by the planting of a purple-flowering Tibouchina tree.
Mayor Christine Kay said the colour purple is an internationally recognised symbolic colour used to honour the lives lost in domestic violence across the country.
“National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion to remember the horrific impact of family violence and to stand with survivors,” said Mayor Kay.
The purple seat and tree planting form part of the Council’s Prevention of Violence Against Women Action Plan.
Mayor Kay said the plan focussed on education, community partnerships and advocacy to drive long-term change.
“We must keep finding ways to raise community awareness of this issue and continue supporting meaningful action to prevent family violence.”
In Australia, one in four women has experienced physical violence by the age of 15, and one woman is killed by a current or former partner approximately every nine days.
