Plans underway to build Ku-ring-gai’s night-time economy

Council will develop a new action plan to build and support Ku-ring-gai’s night-time economy.
At the May meeting, Council resolved to develop a Night-time Economy Action Plan to support local businesses and provide greater after-hours experiences for residents.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said it was vital to have a plan in place ahead of any projected population growth in the area.
“With federal and state housing reforms set to boost our local population, we must be proactive in supporting our local businesses and put a plan in place to create vibrant precincts that are lively after dark,” Mayor Kay said.
“There is a real need to provide more dining, entertainment and social venues to serve the growing community over the next decade.
“Council needs to look at ways to make the process of setting up a restaurant, bar or venue easier for operators and removing any unnecessary regulatory barriers.”
The plan will be developed in consultation with the Ku-ring-gai Chamber of Commerce, adjoining councils and local businesses.
Council will also consult with the NSW Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner to explore any partnership opportunities and ensure the action plan aligns with state policy.
Night-time economy strategies have been successfully rolled out across a number of other local government areas including City of Sydney, City of Parramatta, City of Wollongong, Inner West Council and Canterbury-Bankstown Council.
“Other councils have already demonstrated that night-time economies generate significant revenue and employment opportunities, while creating a stronger and more engaged community,” Mayor Kay said.
An action plan is expected to be presented to Council later this year.
