Understanding hoarding and squalor for volunteers
Online via Zoom
Hoarding behaviours can be misunderstood, especially when seen only through a practical or safety lens. This workshop invites volunteers to understand hoarding as a mental health condition — one that often stems from trauma, loss, and deep emotional attachments. With the right knowledge and tools, volunteers can be a source of trust, compassion, and positive change.
In this workshop, volunteers will:
• Develop a basic understanding of hoarding disorder and its impact on wellbeing
• Learn about the emotional, psychological, and social factors behind hoarding behaviours
• Explore respectful ways to connect with people living in hoarded environments
• Discover practical tips for supporting safety and comfort in volunteer settings
• Reflect on boundaries, communication, and self-care when helping others
• Understand how their role complements professional services in building long-term support
Outcome: Volunteers will walk away with greater confidence, empathy, and clarity about how to support people living with hoarding in ways that build trust and promote wellbeing — all while staying grounded in their role.
Please note that the online session will not be recorded.
