The Iconic Tree Register is a new initiative designed to recognise and celebrate individual trees of exceptional community, cultural and landscape value across the Ku-ring-gai local government area. These may include trees that are prominent in the landscape, have historical or cultural significance, or provide important environmental and biodiversity benefits.
The Register will complement existing tree protection controls. It does not introduce new statutory protections or change how tree management decisions are made, but instead provides a formal framework to identify and acknowledge trees of special significance to the community.
Under the proposed framework:
- Community members will be able to nominate trees for inclusion on the Register through a biennial nomination process.
- Nominations will be assessed by a panel including an arborist, Council staff and community representatives.
- Up to 20 trees will be added to the Register in each round.
- Trees will remain on the Register for 10 years.
- Listed trees will be subject to enhanced notification requirements and, where feasible, will receive proactive maintenance to support their long-term health.
All listed trees will be published on a publicly accessible webpage, including information about their location, species and significance.
Council is inviting feedback on the draft Terms of Reference, which set out the eligibility criteria, nomination and assessment process and management approach for the future Register.
