Help your garden grow with new native planting guide
Published on 17 June 2025
Learn how to plant the right species for your soil and watch your garden thrive with Ku-ring-gai Council’s new Native Planting Guide.
Council has launched the new Native Planting Guide to help local gardeners choose the right plants for their specific soil type — whether heavy clay or light sandy soil.
Ku-ring-gai Mayor Christine Kay said the online guide makes it easy to grow beautiful and sustainable gardens suited to the local environment.
“We all hate watching new plants wither and die in our gardens when they’re inadvertently planted in the wrong soil,” Mayor Kay said.
“This new native planting guide takes the guess work out of selecting the right species for your soil and will help you create a healthy, biodiverse garden.
“It will also help maintain Ku-ring-gai’s unique biodiversity and create more habitats for local wildlife.
“Through growing healthy, sustainable native gardens we can all continue to attract native birds, bees and butterflies and keep the green heart of Sydney thriving.”
To create a bio-diverse native garden simply visit the online guide and follow 3 simple steps:
- Enter your address into the map
- Select your property and find out your soil type
- View the list of plants suitable for your garden
The guide also includes tips on improving your soil, fertilising your garden, best planting times, watering guides and other aftercare tips.
Access the guide online.
You can also visit the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Nursery to browse and buy local native plants recommended in the guide.
