Preschool excursions
Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden offers a range of excursions for preschoolers. Excursions are run by our experienced and qualified environmental education rangers. Our programs are half day (2.5hrs) including short break. A full day program including lunch break is available (4hrs).
Ranger led incursions including fauna encounters and Nature Play are also available.

All preschool lessons link to the learning outcome “children contribute and are connected to their world” with curriculum content including:
- Provide children with access to a range of natural materials in their environment.
- Model respect, care and appreciation for the natural environment.
- Find ways of enabling children to care for and learn from the land.
- Consider the nature of children’s connectedness to the land and demonstrate respect for community protocols.
- Share information and provide children with access to resources about the environment and the impact of human activities on environments.
- Embed sustainability in daily routines and practices.
- Look for examples of interdependence in the environment and discuss the ways the life and health of living things are interconnected.
Topics
Our senses and the bush
An insightful program based on sensory awareness activities using touch, sound and smell to connect with the local bush environment, while understanding how human impacts affect the land. They will learn how to identify local flora and fauna while incorporating walks through the Wildflower Garden.

Mini beasts
Learn about both land and water-based critters and discover the unusual features of mini beasts and their habitats. Follow along on a guided walk with our rangers to our pond area to discover a world of bugs as you learn how to dip net for a close-up view and then release them back into the wild. After watching such fascinating mini beasts, you’ll spend some time making your own, through an arts and craft activity.

Native animals and plants
A fun ‘safari’ type excursion to engage students to notice their surroundings by searching for unique species of flora and fauna and meeting some of our own special collection of animals at the Wildflower Garden

Environmental games
‘Eye spy’ along our Senses Track. Smell, touch and see the wonders of nature. Children will engage and learn, while interacting in fun games to ignite their curiosity in the natural world.

Looking after the environment
Learn how to look after native plants and animals and take care of the land in this interactive lesson. You will get up close to some of the Wildflower Garden collection of animals and learn how we care for them. Children will explore local bushland and get their hands dirty when planting native seeds and weeding the gardens.
