A free cooking class and live bands are on this week in St Ives to celebrate Youth Week.

Ku-ring-gai Council’s community centre at St Ives is hosting a free cooking class between 4pm and 5pm on Thursday 11 April.

Participants will learn all the basics of cooking a simple meal such as beef risotto.

The cooking class is suitable for 12 to 18 year olds and is a weekly event during school terms.

On Friday 12 April three local youth bands will take part in ‘Sound Waves’, a free all-age live music event between 6pm and 8:30pm.

The concert will take place at the St Ives Community Centre, and urban artworks created by young people with Streetwork will also be on display.

Free food and pop-up games complete the line-up, with the chance for one lucky concertgoer to win a $100 voucher at the end of the night.

Youth Week is officially on between 11 and 21 April and partially coincides this year with the April school holidays.

Other events for young people during this time include drop-in sessions at St Ives youth centre for games and pop-up art workshops, the Tuff Nutterz inflatable obstacle course at St Ives Showground on 16 April, a giant inflatable soccer-pool tournament on 17 April, and a bush survival skills course at the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden on 17 April.

Mayor Sam Ngai said this year’s Youth Week events are a great celebration of young local talent.

“The free Sound Waves band night and urban artworks showcase our young musicians and artists followed by a huge range of activities for the school holidays. For a full rundown of Youth Week and school holiday events visit krg.nsw.gov.au/whatson
