Native Bush Rat
Bringing back the Native Bush Rat
Council is working with the Sydney Rewilding Initiative, led by The University of Sydney and supported by Ku-ring-gai Council, to bring back the Native Bush Rat - a small but vital native mammal.
Project background
Urban rewilding across Northern Sydney is restoring pockets of native bushland from the Harbour to the Hawkesbury. Led by The University of Sydney, the project brings together Macquarie University, local councils, state agencies and Taronga Zoo to reintroduce native animals that have disappeared.
Why it matters
Urban rewilding goes beyond planting trees by bringing native animals back into reserves and green spaces. It helps to:
- Boost biodiversity
- Rebuild wildlife populations
- Strengthen ecosystem health
- Reconnect people with nature
What is the Native Bush Rat’s role?
It is a small, shy but ecologically powerful species - an unsung hero of urban bushland. It helps:
- Disperse seeds and fungi
- Support pollination
- Compete with invasive black rats
By holding off black rats - which spread disease and harm native wildlife - Native Bush Rats help restore natural balance.
Where and when will this happen?
It will take place in Twin Creeks Reserve (Ku-ring-gai) and Allenby Park Reserve, (Northern Beaches). Fieldwork and research takes place from February to June 2026. After that time there will be regular (bi-annual) monitoring of the population to track how the animals are going for up to five years..
What to expect
You may see researchers and monitoring equipment such as cameras and cage traps in these reserves. There will be no disruption to public access, and no risk to people or pets.
Community benefits
This project will support healthier bushland, improve biodiversity, and create more opportunities to enjoy nature close to home.
Research focus
- Behaviour: Helping animals settle and survive after release
- Genetics: Maintaining healthy, resilient populations
